Whitewater rafting on the Cagayan de Oro River
Cool clean water, fresh mountain air… rafting in Cagayan de Oro on a scenic whitewater raft trip is a genuine Mindanao adventure at its best! Also known as the “City of Golden Friendship,” it has also become famous as the “Whitewater Rafting Capital” of the Philippines.
Our tour picked us up at Plaza Divisoria and we took a 40 minute ride out to the jump-off point, where we geared up with life vests, helmets, and sunscreen, then reviewed some basic paddling skills. We were provided a dry bag to protect our cell phones and anything else that needed to stay out of the water. For the next three hours we experienced everything from calm and relaxing waters to washing machine-like thrills, and had a chance when we were in deep waters to jump in and free float down the river.
Anyone who enjoys the outdoors and is looking for some thrill will be delighted by whitewater rafting in the Cagayan de Oro River. The river itself flows northward from the headwaters in the Kalatungan Mountain Range, in the central region of the province of Bukidnon, towards Cagayan de Oro City where it empties into the Macajalar Bay. It has twenty-three rapids ranging from Class I to Class IV so people of all ages and athletic abilities, with no previous experience, can ride the river, challenge the rapids, and enjoy the rural sights along the banks of the river. You’ll see rocky mountain walls, lush vegetation, and caves that were used by the Filipino soldiers during World War II. You might even spot a monkey!
